7th Ave Greenway takes shape

At long last, work has started on construction of a dedicated cycle lane on 7th Ave, Mission’s first ever. By “long”, I’m referring to the period that has elapsed since Mission’s Cycling Route Task Force met for the first time, on May 23 2018. That’s exactly five years and eight months to the day that work started on building the route that was recommended by the Task Force in its final report submitted in November 2018.

Week 1: Removal of asphalt begins with cutting on the north side of 7th Ave, east of Grand Ave on Friday 27 January 2023.

There have many twists and turns along the way. Various plans by various Councils came and went. Finally, the City hired a consulting firm, Urban Systems in 2021, to design a route.

A press release on the project was issued by Mission Engineering in late 2022. A more detailed summary is presented here.

Week 2:

Construction continues to be focused on the approach to Grand St. Asphalt cut last week is prepared for removal. Sports field fencing has also been removed. (01 Feb 2023)
