Dewdney Nicomen Island Greenway

M3C is working with the Fraser Valley Regional District, First Nations, the District of Mission, and the local Improvement Authorities to advance the vision of Experience the Fraser and access the dykes east of Mission for a multi-user non-motorized greenway.

A greenway was proposed in the 2012 Experience the Fraser, Lower Fraser River Corridor Project,Fraser Valley Regional District Trail Study that was part of a system of building connections between communities, parks, natural features, historic and cultural sites and other points of interest along the Lower Fraser River Corridor.
Given the increased need for recreational opportunities due to population growth, the need to stay local, and increased interest in cycling the Dewdney and Nicomen Island dykes are the most appropriate area to increase walking and cycling opportunities in the region, The dykes are short distance from Mission, feature a beautiful underdeveloped park in the Dewdney Regional Nature Park, provides for many kilometres of linked safe cycling and walking on both dykes and quiet country roads, and provides for opportunities for cultural, historical, and economic development.

M3C's Cycling Amenity Advocacy Efforts

January 1, 2021.
Mission Community Cycling Coalition (M3C) members are all advocates for cycling in a variety of forms. And one major project in the mix - a bike pump track and skills park for Mission.

Members of M3C have worked closely with District Staff to get Council to allocate $300,000 in 2021 to design, construct and open a bike skills park including a hard-surface pumptrack.

M3C members wearing their FVMBA hats presented to the Parks & Rec Committee for 5+ years, created and delivered several concept proposals, and did a pro-bono consultants report on location options and park features which informed staff and Council in making this decision. It was no small feat just to get to the funded stage, but now the fun part begins! A Request for Proposals will be released in January 2021 with an aim to have the park open by the summer.

In the meantime, M3C is working with Parks & Recreation Staff on a smaller, secondary, soft-surface facility to have a space shovel ready for spring 2021 as well. It is a great time for bikes in Mission!

M3C is regularly advocating for amenities both large and small in the District. New bike racks at schools and on First Ave are one of many ways we are working to make it easier and better to ride bikes in Mission.

Founding of M3C - Mission's 2017 Cycling Task Force and Bike Lane Advocacy

Mission Community Cycling Coalition (M3C) was founded as a function of the Task Force created by the District of Mission in 2017. The mandate for the Task Force: assess the current cycling infrastructure in Mission and create a report on recommendations for projects to improve cycling in our community.

The main outcome and objective from this effort was a dedicated bike lane along 7th Avenue from East to West across town. This project is in the design phase with the District's Engineering department seeking qualified contractors to create the design and then construction can begin the following year (2021 tentatively).
